Nathan and Jillian - Married! A fall wedding at Maize Manor and reception at the Hilton Easton

Congratulations to Jillian and Nathan Hysell who were married on 10-24-09! They are an adorable couple who has a lot of love and life to look forward to. They remind me so much of Josh and I about 7 years ago... Young married couple, military influencing on our decision making, but excited for our lives together!
Nathan and Jill were married at Maize Manor United Methodist Church (http://www.maizemanorumc.org/) in Columbus, OH and their reception followed at the Hilton Easton Town Center (http://www.hiltoncolumbus.com/). Both were wonderful locations for this fall wedding. The Bride and Groom both looked stunning in all white accented with red flowers provided by Desantis Florists (http://www.desantisflorists.com/). Nathan is in the Navy and wore his dress whites, a look that will transcend decades and truly document this time in their lives. The day was a bit on the chilly side, so we didn't spend much time outside. Many of the shots were done inside the church or beautiful lobby of the Hilton. Their family and friends made this celebration an evening to remember. Check out this slideshow of some of my favorites from the day!

Lindsay and Nick - Engaged! Perfect Fall Day in Westerville

Lindsay and I went to school together, and we hadn't talked in years! It was great to see her and meet her Fiancé, Nick. They learned about my photography business from my Fall Mini Sessions, and were so thrilled to have a Mini Engagement Session. We had the perfect amount of time to capture these and other great moments of the afternoon. The day couldn't have been better- the last weekend of color and WE CAPTURED IT! Look at those reds and yellows!!

I hope to keep in touch with Lindsay and Nick in their blooming future. Since they are getting married in Myrtle Beach, I don't get the opportunity to photograph their wedding, but I am sure it will be beautiful. Congrats on the engagement.

Kate and Jeff Kennard - Married! An intimate, relaxed backyard ceremony in Centerville, OH

Kate and Jeff are one of the sweetest couple's I've ever met! They both have such kind hearts and their love for each other just beams off one another. Their ceremony and reception were held in the backyard of Kate's parents, what a great memory for the years to come! The entire day was relaxed and laid back, but done with exquisite taste and class. Family and friends gathered to view the ceremony on this fall day, just before the cold set in with the setting of the sun. The bride's style radiated through her choice of dress, her coordination of flowers and her shoes! With an abundance of love from the both family and friends, these two lovebirds had a wonderful event to celebrate. It was so much fun to be a part of their day and I love, love, love their photos!
Enjoy the slideshow and more photos to come very soon!

Custom Portrait Photography- What makes it special and why is it more expensive?

Hi there! I get this question a lot from potential clients and people out there. This article explains why the custom photography experience is different then the ordinary. I hope this answers a lot of questions or concerns you may be wondering. As it talks about numbers of hours spent, behind the scenes, my average wedding is about 80 hours worth of work. By the way, I feel the need to mention, these numbers are not a direct representation of SGP's costs by any means. :) I try to provide custom, quality photography at a reasonable price. While my services may be more then a standard portrait studios or point shoot cameras with "walgreens", I assure the quality is worth the price overall. I've left a few comments/opinions in a nice (blue-ish green color).

(borrowed from the blog: http://www.professionalchildphotographer.com/information/?p=6)

Why Does Custom Photography Cost More?

February 27th, 2008

The digital revolution has brought amazing flexibility and ability to control various factors during the image taking and making process. Photographers, the hobbyist, the professional, the amateur all benefit from this ability to manipulate pixels. However, with flexibility comes a price. Digital camera equipment is still considerably more expensive when you factor in its’ lifespan, the need for additional resources for processing those images, the time it takes to get a usable image and the effort that goes into creating a work of photographic art.
We all know that you can go to the local Walgreen’s and pay a $1.99 for a print - as a client you may wonder why you may pay upwards of $50, $70, $90 for a custom photography print. Photographers hear this statement every once in awhile:
“How in the world can you charge $60 for an 8×10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at x store?”

The truth of the matter is the answer to this question is multifaceted. Much of the cost of a photographic print produced by a professional photographer has a lot to do with the time, equipment costs, artistic vision and reputation of the photographer not to mention expertise and the usual costs of running a legitimate business.

The cost of TIME

Approaching it from a time standpoint, let’s imagine that you have hired a photographer who has work that you love. This photographer is traveling an hour to your destination to photograph your session. Here is an example of a time break down:

session prep time (30 mins - 1 hour, includes equipment and back up equipment checks + vehicle checks)

one hour travel time TO session

15-30 minutes prep time at client’s home

90 minutes-2 hours with client photographing subject

one hour travel time FROM session

30-45 minutes uploading time from digital cards from camera to computer

30-45 minutes time spent backing up the original images

2-5 hours editing time to present you with a diverse gallery of edited images

1 hour prep time getting ready for ordering

2-3 hours time with client for ordering images

1 hour sorting through and checking order

30 minutes-1 hour prep time for delivery

30 minutes-1 hour getting order shipped

any additional phone time or time needed for add on ordering, shipment issues, quality issues

In this example, the time spent per client can range from just under 13 hours to 19 hours - dependent on the photographer’s level of service. This is time dedicated only to ONE session. When the photographer charges $150-$300 for the photo shoot (aka SESSION FEE) you are not just paying for the two hours of session time, you are paying the photographer for 12-19 hours complete time for your session. (For weddings, this time and work load at least doubles itself!!!)

The COSTS of Maintaining a Custom Photography Business:

Regarding equipment costs, a good quality professional camera with a selection of good optical quality lenses and digital storage mediums and computer set up can run from $10,000-$30,000 costs dependent on the photographer. Even though you can purchase a really good quality digital SLR for about $2100 there are still other costs related to photography. A good lens for portrait photography can run from $900 to $2500. A dependable computer system with software loaded for business and creative usage can run $2500 to $8000 dependent on the photographer. (As a photographer, I value this equipment and make sure that it is all insured as well.)

Then come lab costs for specialty products (Albums, Canvas Prints, Regular Prints, Cards, etc). A good photographer knows the lab is integral to their success. Photography labs dedicated to the professional photographer often cost more and offer a range of products that allows the custom photographer to continually offer new, innovative products for you, the discerning client.

Discussion other costs of running a photography business could take awhile so we’ll skip many of the intricate details. There is of course much more: including costs of running the business, taxes, studio rental/mortgage if the photographer has ownership of a dedicated studio, vehicular costs, costs of advertising/marketing, costs of sample pieces that the photographer will likely bring to your session, etc.

APPLES to ORANGES to BANANAS:

Often times clients will mention to their photographer that X studio in the mall/department store only charges $19.99 for an 8×10 “sheet” (SGP sheets are buy one get one free ranging up from $6!!!What a deal!) or they may mention other things related to discount photography chains. The fact is those discount chains make their money on volume, not on customized 1:1 service. In February 2007 leased photography retail space by a rather well known discount department store that started in Arkansas closed down 500 of their portrait studios across the nation? The reason is simple, you cannot make money on 99¢ “professional” prints if you do not sell enough of them. Interestingly enough - those same studios that offer the loss leader packages often charge much much more for their a la carte pricing (as high as $40-50 for an 8×10). The whole reason the big department stores began offering portrait services in the first place was to get you, the savvy consumer, in through their door so that you could spend more money with them in other departments. Your “PORTRAITS” are considered the “loss leader”.

Going to a chain studio, as a consumer, you don’t have the benefit of 1:1 attention for 2 hours at your home where your child is allowed to explore, play and be comfortable in their home environment, nor do you get the experience that many custom photographers are known for or the lovely captures of natural expressions. You simply get a bare bones, “SAY CHEESE” experience. Keep this in mind when selecting a photographer. ( LOVE THIS! It is so true- kids in studio's are a nightmare. Let them be comfortable + me with a camera= wonderful images!!!!)

REPUTATION/EXPERTISE of the PHOTOGRAPHER:

Being in demand (check), being well known for quality work (check), having a good reputation (check) often costs time on the photographer’s part. Their expertise comes at a cost, their time learning their craft and learning the intricacies of lighting and the commitment put forth on their end to create a persona about their business that oozes professionalism (I hope this is me!!!). A great number of photographers go a very long time from the time that they purchase their first good camera to making money at the business of photography. Many photographers, when first starting out, rush in thinking that the business will be easily profitable in no time, how expensive could it be to get a camera and use it to create their dream? They often neglect to factor in the cost of business, the cost of equipment, software, back ups, etc..

Being of sound reputation, a better professional photographer knows that they must always reinvest in their business to create the reputation of being top notch. To create good work good equipment, reliable equipment, back up equipment is a necessity. The photographer who desires to be known as better/best/unparalelled reputation-wise knows that the most important thing they can do for their business is reliability and dependability. This is how reputations get built. Good work often is a wonderful side product of building that good reputation.

I hope this (lengthy) article helps shed some light on WHY a custom photographer is a better choice for your family’s memories. The photographs that are produced as a result of the professionalism and dedication that your photographer has will be cherished for a lifetime (or more) and great thought and consideration should be placed into hiring who is right for your family’s most precious investment.

Emily and Landon! Fall Days and Fun - Fall in Westerville, OH, Photography by Sarah Gaylor Photography at Inniswoods Metro Gardens

Landon has to be one of the most smiling toddlers I've ever had the opportunity to photograph! Emily and Landon also came way of the (fabulous) Fall Mini Sessions!! Emily and I used to swim together, on the same relay team even, so it was a joy to see her again and meet Landon. What a cutie!! Capturing toddlers is something many photographers won't dabble in. They prose too many fits. Not the case here!! Landon was all smiles- all you toddlers take note! Biggest tip I can offer- take some time to make those kiddos comfortable before pulling out your big scary camera, bring a snack, but most of all, be fast so attention is kept. Enjoy another beautiful session at Inniswoods and that gorgeous backdrop called "fall" at Inniswoods Metro Garden (http://www.inniswood.org/).

Owen's 3! Super-hero Birthday Party

Fall Birthday’s have been so much fun this year. While these are not events that I was paid to photograph, I still enjoyed snapping a few for the parents of these adorable kids. My nephew, Owen, turned 3 this November and had a super hero themed party. My sister did a great job decorating putting it all together. My favorite part of the party was the fact that all the kids dresses up in costume! What a great idea  Owen loves Batman and Caelyn went as Super Girl; other guests came as Bat Girl, a Transformer, and the Hulk. His power-wheel provided big fun for all the kiddos. Adorable!

Holiday Photography Sessions - Now booking in Central Columbus and surrounding areas!!!

Hi Everyone! I can't believe I am saying this, but it's almost time for the Holidays! Due to the popularity of the Fall Mini Sessions last month, I've decided to do something similar, but a bit more open. Holiday Sessions are now being scheduled for November 29th and running up through the holidays! This year has been going by so quickly, it is hard to believe we are getting down to one of my favorite times of the year. Getting into the holiday spirit is never difficult for me or my family to do. I am so excited to pull out my Nativity scene (it's the beautiful Willow Tree set- http://www.willowtreenativityset.com/) and savor what that means in to me, my life, my Faith. In the spirit, I will also be making a donation to a charity that speaks to me personally, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (http://www.jdrf.org/). Many of you may not know that type 1 diabetes is something I was diagnosed with 10 years ago.

About Type I Diabetes

Type I diabetes strikes children suddenly and makes them dependent on injected or pumped insulin daily to stay alive. The disease is chronic and can lead to numerous complications.

• 24 million Americans have diabetes

• Most costly chronic disease in the U.S.

• $174 billion in annual health-care costs

• A new case of diabetes in the U.S is diagnosed every 30 seconds

Why JDRF???

• JDRF is the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 diabetes research worldwide.
• 85% of JDRF expenditures directly support research

• Continuously improving lives of people with diabetes while making progress toward a cure.

My donation will be set by the highest booked photography shoot from now until Christmas, which I will match. And of course, if you would like to make a donation, I can include it as well.

Most of you know that I am an on-location photographer- which means, I don't work from a studio, but rather work at location of your choice. This is a great way to have relaxed, professional images wherever you please. :) Since we are in Ohio and the weather is never reliable, I am seeking locations for indoor sessions. I am completely open to your suggestions.

All Holiday Sessions will come with dedicated photography to get your entire holiday portrait needs covered- this includes large family portraits as well! Think what Grandma and Grandpa would like this year- a large canvas print of their beautiful Grandchildren! You will also be able to purchase a photo disc of the entire session. Celebrate the holidays, weather you've been naughty or nice, with photographs that capture your personality.

SOME OPTIONS:

*Quick outdoor session at Easton Town Center (http://www.eastontowncenter.com/)- the large Christmas tree will be in full decor from November 20th on. Meet up; snap a few quality images with you, the kids, the dog, and the cute train! :)
*Quick indoor session at the Hilton Easton (http://www.hiltoncolumbus.com/)- beautifully decorated for Christmas, provides a warm, high class, homey feel.

Both are perfect for getting a holiday card made to send out this year. Session lasts approximately 10-15 minutes so you can continue you’re shopping or run into Starbucks for a peppermint latte! (I am so excited just typing this!!!)
*Indoor and outdoor session at Franklin Park Conservatory (http://www.fpconservatory.org/)- this would be a longer session. We'd start inside at the poinsettia tree, which provides that perfect holiday red! Franklin Park is beautiful inside and out. Depending on your family, we can walk about the conservatory and really customize your shoot. The outdoor gardens provide unique sculptures, dense pines, and great architecture if you are looking for something of that nature. Please note, these sessions do require admission fees to the conservatory, prices vary based on time and number of people. For prices, hours, etc, see their website.

*A mini session in the comfort of your own home! Your own tree, your own decor. Kids and Pets in their zone works well to capture the Joy of your home at Christmas time. SGP will bring the lighting to you and set up a perfect Holiday themed photo in from of your tree, fireplace, front porch, or outside (or all of them!). Prices based on time and number of people. Contact me for details.

Here are some photos from last year taken from the comfort of home:

*Tree Picking, Caroling, giving to charity, solider returning from a deployment, or your family dinner can all be documented! This is a full experience as you get variety of posed and candid’s that really commemorate your event to the fullest. Let your imagination loose and think outside the black and white backgrounds of Sears and Target (not that those are bad- I do it from time to time!!) and really make some Holiday photo magic. Pricing based on time, number of people, and location.

Samples from on Location Shoot 2008:

Each session is catered to your needs and requests. Please inquire with me if you are interested in a session in the upcoming weeks. I'm looking forward to sharing the holiday spirit with you and your favorites.

(here it goes....a little early, but I'm in the spirit...)

Happy Holidays Everyone!!!

Caelyn playing with Mommy's things...

Ah, ah, ah, Caelyn! That is one piece of expensive equipment. But, what can you say to a curious two year old? She sees her Mommy digging in the big black bag of camera stuff and probably wanted in on the fun. I quickly grabbed my camera and fired a shot in natural light, on our kitchen floor, and just thought it was too cute not to share with everyone. I loved her shirt this day and thought it was sweet how she was being extra cautious and delicate with Mommy's things.

WOAH, It's November!

Wow, wow, wow, November!? Really?? Winter is knocking on my door and I am saying "go away"... For those of you all who know me, I'm not a winter fan, I don't like being cold unless I am in the mountains with my snowboard :) I just checked the weather for the weekend and was very surprised with the mid- 60 degree forecast. I am hoping to get out tomorrow, before the frigid temperatures set in, with my camera to explore landscapes and creation of things "non-portrait", which I haven't done in a while. I was recently inspired by Rebecca Lilly, a wonderful photographer I happened to find on Flickr and became an immediate fan of her ethereal portraits and nature photos. ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/rebecca-lily/3830168458/ - enjoy!!). I'm hoping for some of her creative juices to flow from my brain, to my shutter finger and lens focusing hand!

Anyhow, I just wanted to say that things for SGP have been going very well lately. I've been successful in attaining more bookings and assignments then I know what to do with! I have two more wonderful weddings to share with you soon with some images that I am so proud of. The 'Fall Mini's' were a wonderful way to connect with old friends and capture the beautiful gold tones of fall. SGP will be offering holiday family sessions, locations and dates to be determined, but I am open to suggestions. Some thoughts have been documenting family Christmas Tree pickings, your holiday parties, and the first snow- any of these are bringing me fun inspiration. I look to start holiday work after Thanksgiving- I need some time to catch up :)

You've probably noticed no recent blogging going on- well, there has been little time with me working full time to dedicate to SGP. I don't know when I will be able to stop working entirely, but it seems the time in drawing nearer to my goal. I continue to say "thank you" to everyone out there who helps me make this reality. XOXO.
